Name of Head of Department: Dr. Narayan Bahadur Mahotra, Associate Professor
Department introduction/description:
The Clinical Physiology Department of MMC has been primarily serving in medical education, providing fundamental knowledge of physiology that is essential for understanding the human body and its intricate functions. Physiology is the study of how the human body’s cells, tissues, organs and systems work, which couples the basic sciences with clinical practice, which is crucial for diagnosing and managing diseases. Hence, physiology can be considered an essential and critical discipline for healthcare profession students, practitioners and researchers.
Currently, the department is involved in teaching-learning of all 8 undergraduate programmes of MMC, namely MBBS, BDS, BMLT, BMIT, B. Perfusion Technology, B. Pharm, BASLP, B. Optometry along with 3 postgraduate programmes (MD Clinical Physiology, MD Pediatrics and MS Orthopedics) as per the respective curriculum. The department has a Hematology and Clinical Physiology lab where students learn and practice various blood experiments and clinical examination skills. The departmental library serves different standard textbooks for references. Furthermore, various medical researches are conducted here which have been published in national and international journals.
The department has also provided a significant contribution in producing human resources in Physiology needed for medical education for the country. Till date, the department has produced 15 MD Clinical Physiology postgraduates who have been working as pillars of medical education and research activities in various national and international medical institutions.
The department also conducts Inter-Medical College Physiology Quiz Contest every year to arouse interest in medical students for better learning. Our department has always been involved in clinical service from pulmonary function test to intraoperative neuro-monitoring as per the necessity in the hospital. We further aim to establish our own Electrophysiology Lab, Autonomic Function Lab, Spirometry and extend research activities.
