    • Department introduction/description :

    The Department of Ophthalmology was started in 1983. It was the first Department to start an MD residency program in 1987. With the expansion of physical facilities and pressing needs of expanding its services to more needy people, the out-patient department was shifted to its present premises with the new identity of B. P. Koirala Lions Centre for Ophthalmic Studies (BPKLCOS) on 30th October 1996. BPKLCOS has always been the prime institution with the aim of achieving academic excellence, extensive hospital and community service and intensive research programme, and has been able to establish itself as one of the integral part of the Institute of Medicine (IOM).

    • Department vision, mission and goals :

    The main objectives of the eye department is to provide quality eye care services at affordable cost to Nepalese people, to produce highly skilled ophthalmic human resources for the nation and to conduct research that would help betterment of ophthalmic care in the country and outside.  The major goals of BPKLCOS can be summarized as below:

    5. Dr Ranju Kharel Sitaula was the winner of Best Poster Award for “Hope for Sight at the Time of Plight- 1st SHAPU Case of 2023 Outbreak at BPKLCOS” at the 7th Nepal Vitreo-Retina Conference and the 10th Indo-China Ocular Inflammation Study Group Meeting on 16-18th November 2023, Nepal.

    6. Dr Sanjeeta Sitaula completed 3-months Fellowship in Neuro-ophthalmology supported by the IOFF- AAO Subspecialty Fellowship (October 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023) at Sue Anschutz-Rodgers University of Colorado Eye Center.

    7. Dr Sanjeeta Sitaula received the ARVO Foundation Developing Country Eye Researcher Travel Award to attend the 2024 Annual Meeting of the ARVO in Seattle, USA (May 5-9, 2024)
