Name of Head of Department :     Dr Anil Bhattarai

Department introduction/description :

This year marks the 16th year of the establishment of the CTVS department. This journey from being one of nearly a dozen units in the then department of general surgery, to a full-fledged department with 3 vibrant units can certainly be considered a journey of growth. Looking back at the varieties of services provided to hundreds of thousands of fellow citizens ailing from cardiac, thoracic and vascular problems, I also call it a journey of service, team work, perseverance and courage.

The department has been actively involved in establishing CTVS service in Pokhara academy of health sciences (PAHS). The only one hybrid operation theatre in the country is in full swing. A number of complex vascular, cardiac surgeries and Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVI) have taken place fully justifying all the hard work in establishing the facility.

The maturity gained in the execution of cardiothoracic and vascular clinical work, the initiation of the heart team and close professional relations with pulmonology and critical care colleague in the TU teaching hospital should be utilized towards building the Heart, Heart- Lung and lung transplant program. All our future planning, in terms of infrastructure, human resources and capacity building must be steered in this direction.
