Name of Head of Department:
Associate Professor Dr. Anusuya Shrestha
Department introduction:
The department of Anatomy at Maharajgunj Medical Campus is one of the first departments to guide medical students at the very beginning of their medical education. A team of young and energetic doctors with background in MD/ MS Clinical Anatomy along with two helpers form the workforce in the department. The department boasts of a wonderful history of being led and run by national pioneers in the field of anatomy.
The department was conceived on the ground floor of the yellow building. The department was then shifted to the MOHEGO building. At present, the department is located in the Basic Science Building. Apart from the department faculties’ room, we have a separate resident’s cubicle, histology demonstration room, procedure room and a dissection hall with a museum in the Basic Science Building of Maharajgunj medical campus.
The department is equipped with adequate binocular microscopes, a tissue processing facility and infrastructure for hosting hands-on workshops for various cadaveric procedures. We have been providing a platform for collaborative cadaveric dissection with departments of ENT, Orthopedics, General Surgery, and Anesthesiology. We also produce histology slides in our tissue processing facility within the procedure room.
We are involved in guiding undergraduate students of MBBS, BDS, BPH, BPharma, BOptom, BSc. MIT, BMLT, BASLP, BSc. Perfusion. Tech, and Nursing (Maharajgunj Nursing Campus) as well as post graduate students.
We promote discussion, drawing, demonstration, and dissection for learning Anatomy. We assist our students in these activities as needed. Apart from that, we are also involved in research activities, and guide students desiring to pursue research activities.
The department has been running a post graduate program in MS clinical anatomy since 2004/ 2005. To date, 15 batches of MD/ MS clinical anatomists have been produced and four are currently enrolled in the residency program in the department.
Department vision, mission and goals:
To produce human resources in health, trained for the needs of the community, the department trains medical students of different programs in clinical anatomy.
In the near future, the department plans to provide service through karyotyping and genetic lab facilities. We also plan to continue conducting workshops and hands on training sessions in collaboration with different departments in the future. The laboratories are in the process of upgrading for extending services and education.
