    Department introduction/description :

    The Department of Surgery was established in 1978. Prof. Anjani Kumar Sharma was the founder Head of the Department. In 1992, Postgraduate Medical Education Coordination Committee (PGMECC) was formed in coordination with Bir Hospital. MS General Surgery was started as a postgraduate course with four students enrolled in the first batch. From 2004 IOM and NAMS (academic wing of Bir Hospital) are running their own PG program separately. Both programs accept foreign nationals also who are mainly from India, Maldives and Bangladesh. Currently the department is primary department for conducting program for MS general surgery and general surgery subject of MBBS, BDS and BAMS program of IOM.

    Department offers a variety of clinical services to patients. The department has 4 units, among which 2 units mainly focus on the surgery of abdominal organs such as intestines including the oesophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, rectum, anal canal, liver, pancreas, gallbladder and bile ducts apart from routine general surgical patients. One unit focuses on breast, thyroid gland and general surgery. One unit offers all surgical cases of pediatric population. The department has primary responsibility of emergency surgical patients care.
