Name of Head of Department: Dr. Bikram Prasad Gajurel
- Department introduction/description: The Department of Neurology at Maharajgunj Medical Campus, Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, is a leading center for neurological care and education. Established in 2068 B.S. under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Krishna Kumar Oli, the department has been providing top-notch medical care for various neurological disorders and at the same time fostering academic excellence. Patients with neurological disorders are major bulks of emergency services, out and inpatient departments. The department is currently run by a team consisting of five neurologists and 16 nurses. The department has a separate ward with 34 dedicated beds for patients with neurological disorders. There are six critical care and four stroke high dependency beds in the ward itself. However, as the number of cases getting admitted far exceeds the beds available in the ward, equal number of cases are constantly admitted at other wards. The department provides medical care to more than 800-1000 outpatients per week and about 60-80 inpatients per day in the neurology and medical wards, HDUs and ICUs every day providing specialized services like stroke management, neuro-ophthalmology, movement disorders, plasma exchanges and botulinum toxin injections among others. The department also runs a Doctorate of Medicine (DM) in Neurology residency program, enrolling two residents each year. This program has produced several neurologists who now serve in various medical institutions across Nepal.
- Department vision, mission and goals:
The main aim of the Department of Neurology is to provide high quality and standard medical care for patients with various neurological disorders. The department has aims to expand the subspeciality services to start separate stroke, epilepsy, movement disorders, headache, neuromuscular and demyelinating diseases clinics in the near future. It also has plans to start a separate ward to admit and care for patients with acute stroke. It also aims, at the same time, to foster excellence in academic activities. Educational activities are a cornerstone of the department and feature journal clubs, topic presentations, and case discussions. The department has vision to produce qualified neurologists in adequate numbers who could serve at different areas of the country. As mentioned, the department also runs DM Neurology residency program, enrolling two residents each year. Since the current production is not adequate, the department has vision to train internal medicine and general practice residents and specialists in specific topics such as stroke, epilepsy and headaches which carry the major burden of neurological illnesses in our country. The main aim of these training is to empower community level health care workers to adequately care for patients with commonest neurological disorders. The department aims to start clinical fellowship trainings in cerebrovascular diseases in the future. The department has assisted various government programs like PEN protocol development programs, stroke protocol development programs etc. to develop appropriate protocols to help the government run and update its current programs. Research is another key focus, with faculty and residents contributing to original articles, systematic reviews, and case reports. The department has plans to work with national and international organizations like the Nepalese Academy of Neurology, Nepal Stroke Project, Nepal Epilepsy Society, International Movement Disorder Society and the World Federation of Neurology to improve the care of neurological disorders in Nepal. Overall, the Department of Neurology is committed to advancing neurological care, education and research in Nepal, making significant contributions to both patient care and medical research.
