Introduction:

Department of Pathology was established along with the MBBS course in Maharajgunj Medical Campus in 1984 and the former Dean of IOM, Prof. Hari Govind Shrestha was the pioneer in establishing the department. Also, with his initiation, the first post graduate program in Pathology in Nepal was established in MMC. He was the first HOD in the department.

Department of Pathology undertakes teaching learning activities to medical undergraduates, 17 postgraduates, and 3 fellows in form of Lectures, Structured Interactive Sessions, Laboratory Exercise, Journal Club, Subject and Gross Seminars, Slide Seminars and Interdepartmental Conferences. Routine reporting of Histopathology, Cytopathology and Hematology are performed by consultants on a daily basis. These all form an excellent opportunity to teaching learning activities.   In addition, B.M.L.T., B Pharm, BSc MIT and Nursing (BSc, BN, BMidW) are some of the academic programs the department is currently involved in.  Regular research work and publications are also an important part of the departmental activity.

Hospital services have been provided in form of Histopathology, Cytopathology (FNAC/USG Guided FNAC/CT guided FNAC/PAP Smears/Fluids/Sputum/BAL), Hematology (all lab services including bone marrow examination), Capillary Electrophoresis (Hemoglobin, Protein, and Immunotyping), Factor Assays, Blood Banking with Component Separation, Imprint Cytology, Frozen section, Special staining and chemistry, and Immunohistochemistry. Recently, Liquid Based Cytology and Flow Cytometry have been started.  In the near future, the department is planning to start ANA-IFA, FISH and Immunofluorescence Microscopy as well.  We hope to further improve Blood Bank Services and have recently hired a specialist MD in Transfusion Medicine.

We also have competent technical staffs consisting of technologists, technicians and assistants.  There are 13 staff in hematology, 11 in histopathology, and 12 in Blood Bank.
