    • Department introduction/description :

Department of Plastic surgery and burns is one of the specialized departments of Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital run by group of faculty plastic surgeons from Maharajgunj Medical Campus, Institute of Medicine. Plastic surgery and burns services were started in this hospital in 1998. Initially these services were provided through Plastic Surgery and Burns unit under the Department of Surgery. With regular service, academics and research the work load of the unit gradually increased and Department of Plastic Surgery was established in 2016. During these 26 years, it has progressed significantly in terms of manpower, academics and clinical services. At present, the department provides wide range of clinical services to patients with Burn, trauma, cancer and congenital problems. It also performs various complex reconstructive surgeries and cosmetic surgeries regularly. The department is one of the reputed centers in the country to provide MCh training in plastic surgery. Besides training to MCh Plastic surgery residents, it is also providing regular teaching activities to MS General Surgery, MD Dermatology and MDS Maxillofacial residents and MBBS and BDSBDS students.

    • Department vision, mission and goals :

The department is one of the oldest centers of the country for plastic reconstructive surgery and treatment of burn and hand injury patients. The department is recently performing various complex surgeries regularly that include Brachial plexus surgeries, free flap surgeries for oral cavity cancers, mandibular defects and lower limb trauma. The department is also working together with other departments including orthopedic surgery, Neurosurgery, ENT, maxillofacial surgery, Gynecology, GI surgery etc. to provide plastic reconstructive surgery and microvascular surgery services in combined operations.

Future plan is to strengthen and expand the subspecialty services of plastic surgery. We aim to develop subspecialty divisions that include craniofacial, Hand surgery, Trauma, Oncoplastic, cosmetic, Burns, Transplant (Limbs and Face), Lymphatic in near future.

We require number of faculties to be increased to achieve these goals. We also continue training to faculties, residents and nurses to accomplish these tasks. We aim to establish dedicated hand surgery center in the hospital and also start fellowship training in Hand surgery. We dream of establishing Burn center in the hospital that can provide comprehensive care of burn patients. Burn center should ideally be the one which has got its own ICU beds for treatment of critical patients, its own operation theatre, separate dressing room, separate shower room or bathroom for patients and staffs. This is very important because burn patients need frequent visit to Operation Theater for dressing changes under IV sedation, debridement and skin grafting. These patients tend to become critically ill any time and require to be shifted to ICU immediately. Besides these, we also need minor Operation Theater for performing minor plastic and hand surgery operations as day care surgeries or emergency cases.
