Psychiatric service in Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital started functioning from the year 1986. Since then, the department has been providing various services to patients and as well as conducting many academic activities. Being a pioneer in starting post-graduation program in field of Mental Health, the department has moved along various changes and achieved accomplishments since its inception.

Goals

The three-year MD (psychiatry) and 2 year M.phil clinical psychology program will prepare a resident to acquire the knowledge, skill and attitude required of him/her and acquire the competencies to manage mental health problems independently.

Objectives

To be able to:

  • manage independently mental health problems
  • diagnose mental health problem through the collection of information from patients, relatives, physical examination, mental state examination and available diagnostic procedures and facilities.
  • demonstrate an adequate knowledge, skills and attitude for the development of mental health services in Nepal
  • arrange and. or conduct appropriate mental health training for hospital staff and community health personnel of all levels in matters concerning mental health.
  • demonstrate knowledge of and act consistent, within the health care objectives of national level.
  • maintain personal and professional standards of international level consistent with his/her role as a leader of mental health team

Training/Workshops/Conferences conducted by department

  • The department was actively involved in scientific committe of 14th SAARC psychiatric conference 2023 themed “Exploring networking opportunities for mental health among SAARC countries”. The comference was conducted at The Soaltee, Kathmandu, Nepal from November 7-8, 2023 
  • From 15th to 19th July, 2024 Global Mental Health Short Course III themed “Global Mental Health Assessment and Measurement: Best Practices and New Directions was conducted in collaboration with TPO nepal and Duke University. The program was conducted at National center for health professionals, MoHeGo building, IOM, TU, Maharajgunj, Kathmandu.
