  • Department introduction/description:

The Department of Surgical Gastroenterology at TUTH was established in the year 2021 under the

Chairmanship of Prof Paleswan Joshi Lakhey, with an aim to provide state of the art treatment for

complex Gastrointestinal, Hepatopancreatobiliary and Liver Transplantation services. Our team comprises of seven members, five from the campus and two clinical registrars from the hospital and have been catering specialist services to the patients with digestive disease including cancer for past 3 years.

We are focused on providing cutting edge quality care in field of surgical gastroenterology and since the

time of inception and formation of our department. We have been committed to strive for excellence, be it

in education, research, training of students or patient care. The department believes on the philosophy of

improved patient outcome by rigorous patient evaluation before surgery, meticulous surgery, and precise

vigilance in the postoperative period. Improved patient outcome in terms of perioperative morbidity and

mortality, and long-term outcome define the quality of surgery. Our genuine endeavor is to improve the

patient outcome and we have been benchmarking our results to improve the quality of patient care.

    • Surgical Gastroenterology OPD 6 days a week
    • Diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy (upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, lower gastrointestinal endoscopy and ERCP)
    • All complex upper gastrointestinal, colorectal, pancreatobiliary, hepatobiliary surgery for both benign and malignant diseases

    • Additional Services/Service Expansion:
    • Liver Transplant Program: Liver transplant program, which was established in May 2019 is being run under the leadership of Professor Ramesh Singh Bhandari. A total of 15 transplants have been performed since 2019. We were able to perform the first independent liver transplant, solely by Nepalese team, and now we have been doing transplant without the support of international team. We aim to sustain this achievement and further improve to make this a regular program in the near future.
    • GI and HPB Cancer OPD: This year we have started our separate OPD in Suresh Wagle Cancer Centre dedicated to care of cancer patient related to GI and HPB diseases. The OPD is run twice weekly, on Sunday (by Unit II) and Wednesday (by Unit I).
    • Complex Laparoscopic Procedures: Our department is also pushing the boundaries in the field of minimally invasive surgeries performing complex gastrointestinal surgeries laparoscopically and plan to open the avenues for robotic surgery in future.
